There <em>was<\/em> a <em>&#8220;sound,&#8221;<\/em> which offered traditional songwriting and vocals with psychedelic overtones, but think of it as more of a calling card than a commitment set in stone. There really wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;rule book&#8221; in the Sixties, because elements from any genre could be incorporated at a moment&#8217;s notice&#8230;case in point,<strong> Jerry Garcia&#8217;s<\/strong> penchant for folding bluegrass grace notes into the <strong>Grateful Dead&#8217;s<\/strong> electric tsunami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On that note, enter <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Armoires (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/the-armoires\" target=\"_blank\">The<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Armoires (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/the-armoires\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Armoires (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/the-armoires\" target=\"_blank\">Armoires<\/a><\/strong>. The CD version of <strong><em>Side Three<\/em><\/strong> includes two hidden tracks, bringing the total experience of both releases to 18 tracks and a playing time of 66 minutes. <strong><em>Side Three<\/em><\/strong> features a cover version of <em>&#8220;The Laws Have Changed&#8221;<\/em> by <strong>The New Pornographers<\/strong>, cited as a major influence for the band. They are also the founders of <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Big Stir Records (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/artists\" target=\"_blank\">Big Stir Records<\/a><\/strong>, which currently has a roster of 15 artists, with even more available via their weekly <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Big Stir Digital Singles (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/big-stir-digital-singles\" target=\"_blank\">Big Stir Digital Singles<\/a><\/strong>. There&#8217;s also a sister label, the Detroit-based <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Futureman Records (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/futureman-records\" target=\"_blank\">Futureman Records<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rex&#8217;s daughter <strong>Miranda Broome<\/strong> serves as touring bassist, while Christina&#8217;s daughter <strong>Larysa Bulbenko<\/strong> is the band&#8217;s violist. Veteran members <strong>Clifford Ulrich<\/strong> (bass) and <strong>Derek &#8220;Kenny&#8217;s Plumbing&#8221; Hannah<\/strong> (drums) round out <strong>The Armoires&#8217;<\/strong>  lineup. Both <strong><em>Zibaldone<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Side Three<\/em><\/strong> are produced by <strong>Steven Wilson<\/strong>, frontman for <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Plasticsoul (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/bigstirrecords.com\/plasticsoul\" target=\"_blank\">Plasticsoul<\/a><\/strong> and a fellow label-mate, with one track produced by <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Spygenius (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/spygenius\" target=\"_blank\">Spygenius<\/a><\/strong> frontman <strong>Peter Watts<\/strong>, also a <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Big Stir Records (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Big Stir Records<\/a><\/strong> artist. Artwork for both releases comes via <strong>Champniss of London<\/strong>, the primary creative force behind the popular <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Big Stir Magazine (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bigstirrecords.com\/magazine\" target=\"_blank\">Big Stir Magazine<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Zibaldone<\/em><\/strong> opens on a jaunty, upbeat note with <em>&#8220;Appalachukrainia.&#8221;<\/em> The fun continues with <em>&#8220;Pushing Forty,&#8221;<\/em> adding a punky energy and a twist on The Who&#8217;s &#8220;My Generation&#8221;&#8230;<em>&#8220;Hope I live before I get old.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;McCadden&#8221;<\/em> is one of the better examples of the band&#8217;s ability to craft &#8220;Contemporary Period Pieces&#8221;&#8230;songs that feel like you knew them decades ago, but are visiting you for the first time right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The Romantic Dream Appears Before Us,&#8221;<\/em> clocking in at 4:47, is one of the band&#8217;s longer pieces, allowing them to stretch out musically. <em>&#8220;Suddenly Succulents&#8221;<\/em> brings the <strong>Fairport<\/strong> connection front-and-center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band&#8217;s penchant for a clever turn of the lyrical phrase is evident on <em>&#8220;(How Did You Make) A Mistake Like Me?,&#8221;<\/em> while <em>&#8220;Satellite Business&#8221;<\/em> is another psychedelic sunrise gem, with emphasis on the tight harmony vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Alesandra 619&#8221; <\/em>is a stellar blending of twangy electric guitars and viola. It stands as proof that the viola plays a key role in the band, rather than being a novelty addition. This track, to my ears, best represents the overall vibe of the band. Everything works together with precision and heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The album&#8217;s closer, <em>&#8220;When We Were in England (And You Were Dead),&#8221; <\/em>is truly compelling, slowly unfolding and adding layers as it swells in intensity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Side Three<\/em><\/strong> opens with <em>&#8220;Some Kinda Handbook (The Senility Prayer),&#8221; <\/em>another fine example of the band&#8217;s delight in crafting lyrics rich with irony and wordplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Anemone!&#8221;<\/em> boasts a full, rich sound which makes full use of 12-string guitar, viola, and harmony vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The Laws Have Changed,&#8221;<\/em> the aforementioned New Pornographers cover. is tight and tuneful. It&#8217;s one of those tracks where the band&#8217;s love of the sound they have forged comes shining through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closing track on the CD version of <strong><em>Side Three<\/em><\/strong>, <em>&#8220;Not A Good Man,&#8221;<\/em> showcases another legendary band that clearly served as a major influence, Los Angeles&#8217; own <strong>X<\/strong>, specifically the vocal exchanges between <strong>John Doe<\/strong> and <strong>Exene Cervenka<\/strong>. The track crackles with punky energy and exuberance, and is reason enough to go for the CD version.
